Evergreen Content

The community puts out great content every day but there’s a handful of blogs, videos, and vizzes that I constantly revisit or recommend. I am grateful to all the people on this list for inspiring and teaching us and I wanted to share some of that content with you. So without further ado, here’s ten pieces of content I’m always coming back to:

Tutorials

Rounded Bar Charts by Andy Kriebel

Part of the reason I keep revisiting this blog is because I can just never seem to remember how to do it but it’s also the first resource I point people to if they want to make rounded bar charts because it’s so easy to follow. Bonus: this same method can be used to make pill shaped buttons in Tableau without importing a custom shape.

Trellis Chart by Luke Stanke

Similar to the one above, small multiples can be tricky to remember all the steps for so when I need a refresher I turn back to this. And a reason I like this version is because of the nifty trick for putting the labels above the bars.

Drill Down by Spencer Baucke

Adding drill-down functionality is a great way to add flexibility to your standard table and this blog by Spencer is so accessible. If anyone ever wants to get started with drill downs I pass this along to them.

Pagination by Autumn Battani

Speaking of beefing up your tables, who doesn’t love some good pagination? I know it’s corny to include something written by me but it’s both one I recommend often as well as one I revisit to pull the calcs from.

Transparent Shapes by Kevin Flerlage

Raise your hand if you love transparent shapes. If you’re raising your hand give me a high five and if you’re not click on the button below. This blog from Kevin covers 14 use cases for them and BONUS has versions that you can download immediately.

Stunning Scatterplots by Ryan Sleeper

I just think this version really takes your standard scatterplot up a notch and since I first read this blog I haven’t made a single scatter plot without this method. It’s so easy but so sleek and worth adding to your tool belt if you’re not doing this already.

Inspiration

Tableau Design Tips by Zak Geis

No one can convince me that Zak isn’t an absolute wizard. And he’s generous enough to teach us some of his magic. This is a great place to go and get inspiration to on how you can sprinkle a little pixie dust on your vizzes.

Better Tables by Ludovic Tavernier

Say it with me: “tables don’t have to be ugly”. Ludovic puts that statement into practice with this great viz showing a great table transformation. I revisit this when I need a little reminder on how to turn up the heat on my tables.

Makeover Monday by Damola Ladipo

There’s not enough space here for how much I love this viz. I want to get a tattoo of it. The layout, the annotations, the analysis, the COLOR PALETTE. Ten out of ten. 15/10 actually. Looking at this makes me want to be a better developer.

Wealth & Banking by Ellen Blackburn

In my opinion there’s no better business dashboard builder than Ellen and any time anyone asks me who the GOAT is I point directly to her Tableau Public profile. Her portfolio is an absolute masterclass in providing insights through a clean, accessible, and intuitive design.

And that’s all she wrote. Looking to learn even more, check out my last ten tiny Tableau tips blog
